There are those who say that the future is beyond anyone’s control. That statement can never be more wrong than it is today. Due to innovations in technology and communication, we Filipinos live in a time where any action, good or bad, has the potential of an immediate and national, if not global, impact. It is so much easier today to provide or furnish information on, get a reply or mobilize action for what one truly believes in. For us it is biofuels, and we believe its widespread use can lead to a cleaner, greener and a more sustainably better future for all of us.
We are the Asian Biofuels Hub, Inc (ABHI), owner and operator of the most recognizable website on biofuels development in Asia, www.biofuelshub.com. We are here to utilize the worldwide web to speak our cause. Our advocacy is bioethanol. This website is focused on promoting awareness, understanding and use of E10, which is 10% bioethanol mixed with 90% conventional gasoline. On this website, ABHI will provide as much practical information on E10 use and availability as possible and shall make the insights of key, prominent persons and groups available to the motoring public, all through new media productions available in biofuelshub.com.
As a backgrounder, bioethanol, which is both an additive and direct substitute for gasoline, has gained significant importance in the last decade due to its many benefits. Economically, it has a negating effect on high oil prices which is driven by dwindling and unsecured oil supply. Environmentally, it helps in the reduction of air pollution and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Locally, it has provided an alternative market for sugarcane, which is an important crop grown in an agriculture-based country such as ours.
The Philippines passed in 2006 R.A. 9367 or the Biofuels Act of 2006 which mandates the use of biofuels. Due to the availability of supply, the blending of 2% biodiesel for every volume sold of conventional petroleum diesel started in May 2007. For bioethanol, the mandate for a minimum 5% blend by volume of bioethanol to substitute directly for gasoline started this year, February of 2009.
