The blending of at least 5% bioethanol into every volume of gasoline sold was formally launched last February 6, 2009. All oil companies have started the blend rate at 10% or “E10”, as it is more popularly known. However, motorists attest and oil companies agree that the Filipinos are still in the dark as to whether or not their vehicles are compatible with E10.

BiofulsHub sets the record straight, once and for all. We went straight to and have coordinated with various car manufacturers and dealers to determine which car models are compatible with E10.

Here is the updated table for car models compatible with E10:

Toyota 2004 All models are compatible with E10 except for 7KE and 1 RVE engines
Volvo 2004 S-Class
XC-Class
S-80 models, Year 2000 model are compatible with E10 but users are advised to check on warranty clauses first.

All models released since 2004 are compatible with E10 but the car manufacturer does not recommend it since Volvo cars are only tested based on 5% ethanol blend only.

Based on Table 1, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota appear to have an advantage in the automobile market because almost all of their car models are compatible with E10.

As for Suzuki and Mitsubishi, they are still in the process of testing the performance of their vehicles when using E10 fuel since E10 was only launched in the Philippines this year. As per Mitsubishi’s technical team, their test vehicles have now run a total of 20,000 kilometers on E10 and so far, there are no issues or problems. Test results have already been completed but these are not official and published yet since further inspection are still being conducted.

In the past week, Chevrolet and Hyundai have released print advertisements in the major dailies stating that their vehicles can use E10 and advocating the use of ethanol-blended gasoline.

harmful?

We need to know. Please give us feedback

Is the Shell Super Premium Ethanol 10% mix compatible with a 1998 Mitsubishi
Lancer GL?

Will this harm the carbeurettor?

Thanks.
Sabrina  - On 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer GL   |2009-06-30 04:22:26
Hi Sir,

I apologize for the late reply. As per our coordination with Mr.
Gideon Bruno of Mitsubishi, the company does not recommend the use of E10
gasoline on cars with carbureted engine. Mitsubishi does not have any formal
study regarding this but Mr. Bruno tried E10 on his brother-in-law's older
Mitsubishi car model, the car ran on E10 but he said that there were some
changes in the engine performance.

Based on our research, cars with
carbureted engine can run on E10. Please see the link below:

will the 4AF (carb) or 4AGE (20V vvt silvertop) compatible with E10?
Sabrina  - On 1990-1992 Toyota   |2009-06-30 04:29:04
Hi,

As per our coordination with Toyota, they are not encouraging the use of
E10 on older car models especially those with carbureted engines. However, since
the Biofuels Act has already mandated that all gasoline products in the
Philippine market shoudl have at least 10% ethanol blend by February 2011,
Toyota has prepared some guidelines on how car owners can make their older car
models compatible with E10 gasoline:

1. Replacement of some components of the
fuel system to make them compatible to ethanol-blended gasoline.

2.
Installation of other engine enhancements to make it suitable for ethanol
fuel.

For more information, you may visit Toyota service centers regarding
this.

Thank you.
docmacoy   |2009-07-22 05:54:33
Thank you for all your work Sabrina. Those info were a lot of help. It is just
sad that our right to choose between E10 or not is being taken away from us. I
would like to believe all the studies regarding E10 being good for my car (
Toyota XE 1996 ), but in reality I will know if they are all right after several
years of using it . And if they are wrong I will be the one who will pay for
such mistakes or miscalculations. The Gas companies are NOT even confident with
E10 for carburetor cars , for them to post disclaimers in front of their
pumps... that is not very encouraging.

Just like to know if what are the essential parts that needed to be replaced for
4AF Engines. Thanks.
Sabrina  - Beeps   |2009-08-27 09:33:22
Hi,

Sorry for late reply. As of now, we do not have a complete list of which
components should be replaced. It is best for you to consult the nearest Toyota
shop so that company experts can evaluate your engine and fuel system. They will
be the ones to advise you on which parts should be replaced.

Thank you.

Hi Sabrina,
Any advisory from Honda Cars regarding models incompatible with
e-10? like that of Toyota?
Sabrina  - On Honda Advisory   |2009-06-30 08:38:16
Hi Diorel,

Based on our previous coordination with Honda, they have car
models dating as far back as 1997 which are already compatible with E10.
However, for those models that are not included in the list we have provided,
our resource person, Mr. James Beruno from the Technical Department of Honda
said that you only have to change some of the fuel system components. These
components are readily-available but Honda may not have them on stock here in
the Philippines; they might have to order them from Japan.

With regard to a
plan similar to that of Toyota, kindly just stand by for official announcements
or bulletins at Honda dealer shops.

Thank you.

how about for old EFI engines such as the 4AGE in 16valves and 20valves variants
with VVT are they compatible with E10? since these engines are not launched
locally. i'm planning for an engine swap from my carby 4AF to an EFI 4AGE
(20valves) will E10 work with the 4AGE EFI engine?
Sabrina  - re: 1990-1992 toyota   |2009-07-01 07:16:58
Hi Patrick,

The EFI was not launched locally, it was manufactured by
Toyota Australia before 1992 for their Land Cruiser model. Sad to
say, Toyota Australia does not recommened the use of E10 on EFI engine
because of the "incompatibility of the material" (source: http://www.dwyers.com.au/joomla/index2.php?opti.... In this case, you are advised to consult a Toyota Service Center to see
if certain components have to modified to make the car compatible
with E10.

Thank you.

hi!

what i'm inquiring is the compatibility of a japan import 4AGE engine (fuel
injected, in 16valves and 20valves variant)with E10 fuel I'm planning for an
engine swap and this is the motor that i would most likely use. (recipient car
is a corolla '90 originally with a 4AF carb engine)

thanks!
Sabrina  - re: 1990-1992 toyota   |2009-07-01 09:33:38
Hi,

Since the engine is fuel-injected then it is compatible with
E10.

Thanks!
Patrick Espinosa  - re: 1990-1992 toyota   |2009-07-01 09:36:52
hi!

even if the engine is mainstream 1990 to early 1993 (for 16valve variants
to the early 20valve variants) and the advisory of toyota states that only 2004
models are compatible w/ E10.
Sabrina  - re; 1990-1992 toyota   |2009-07-01 09:52:11
Hi,

As per my coordination with Ms. Joan, a customer service representative
for Toyota, their bulletin or info database says that E10 can run on
fuel-injected engine systems. Prior to 2004, there were already several models
available in the market that are compatible with E10 since ethanol-blended
gasoline were already used in some countries at that time. But it was only in
2004 when Toyota had a major rollout of car models that are compatible with E10.
In fact, all Toyota car models except for those with 7KE and 1RVE engines are
not compatible with E10.

Thanks!
Dan  - query   |2009-07-31 06:03:25
I understand that EFI engines are compatible with EI0. Why is it that 7KE
engines are not. My vehicle is a Toyota Revo 2000 model EFI with 7KE engine. Is
E10 not compatible on this model? I will wait for your reply thru my email
addresss. Thank you.
Sabrina  - query   |2009-08-27 06:26:08
Hi Dan,

I apologize for the late reply. Based on personal experience, my
father owns the same car model as yours and it runs on E10. In spite of the 7KE
engine, your fuel system is EFI which means that it is fuel-injected so it is
compatible with E10. There are some car models which have 7KE engines and
different fuel system components that may not be compatible to ethanol
fuel.

Thank you.
Jun Hernandez  - 4k engine   |2009-07-05 14:18:47
Owner-type jeeps are using 4k toyota engine, and there are still many of us own
the same despite the coming of new model cars. Is e10 safe for these engines?
Sabrina  - - 4K engine   |2009-07-06 07:57:56
Hi,

As per our research, there are several variations on the Toyota 4K
engine. Only the 4K-E model will run on E10 because this is fuel-injected (the E
in the nomenclature stands for Electronic Fuel-Injected). As for the other
models of the K series, please consult the nearest Toyota Service Center so they
can advice you on the guidelines or needed alterations for the engine to become
compatible with E10.

Thank you.
Diorel  - PGM-FI   |2009-07-07 08:04:55
Dear Sabrina,

My Honda accord 1995 exi A/T is PGM-FI. This is already fuel
injection right? I just wonder why it was not included in the Honda listing of
e10 compatibles whereas its been said that e-10 is okay for fuel injected
engines.

Thanks.
Sabrina  - PGM-FI   |2009-07-07 09:46:24
Hi again Diorel,

Yes, this is already a fuel-injected engine. Technically, it
is already compatible with E10 gasoline. However, you may still need to inquire
further or consult Honda regarding this. The engine may be fuel-injected and
compatible to E10 but some components of the fuel system are not compatible with
E10. For example, some components of the fuel system like the pillar hose or
pillar tube is made from rubber which when exposed to E10 gasoline may swell and
affect the engine performance detrimentally.

Thank you.

Dear Sir,
My Nissan Sentra 1999 FE has a carbureted engine, is this
compatible with E10 gasoline?
Hope for your response.
Thank you
Sabrina  - Nissan Sentra FE 1999   |2009-07-16 03:59:24
Hi David

Technically, E10 will work on carbureted engines. (Please see
related article here: http://www.biofuelshub.com/features/18-special/...)

However, some components of the fuel system may not be compatible with
E10 because of the material from which they are made of. Based on
our coordination with Mr. Allan Olivia, Technical Head for Nissan, all
Nissan car models released since 1995 are compatible with E10. Here is the
link for that: http://www.biofuelshub.com/features/4-features/....

Thanks,

Hi!

I was wondering about E10 Gas since i bought my 2009 Honda Jazz this year.
The Honda stated that the engine fuel supply system of the new jazz is
Programmed Fuel Injection
(PGM-FI) and based on E10 Gas compatibility the PGM-FI
is compatible with the new Honda Jazz.

Based on your table for car
compatibility on E10, the honda jazz 2009 is not listed on the table... even if
its fuel injection engine? also what can i do to make it E10 compatible?

Thank
you! looking forward for your reply!

Hi Marlowe,

Sorry for the late reply and for not being able to update
the list of cars compatible with E10. At the time of my last
update for this website, there was no update from Honda yet on the
additional car models that were tested and concluded to be compatible with
E10. Anyway, I checked with Honda Philippines and yes, your Honda Jazz
2009 model is compatible with E10. You can verify this info through this

Hi good evening, I want to ask if Corolla XL 2001 model will be compatible with
E10 fuels. thank you.
Sabrina   |2009-08-27 09:38:55
Hi Ryan,

I apologize for the late reply. If the engine of your Corolla XL
2001 is fuel-injected then it is compatible with E10. However, it is recommended
that you have the fuel system checked in a Toyota-authorized shop so they can
evaluate if there are components that have to be replaced to make it apt for
E10.

Thank you.
eugene balcos   |2009-07-27 04:19:47
It is so incosiderate for the gov't to require 10 ethanol on all gasolines
without at least first requiring car manufacturers to take steps to ensure the
compatibility of older cars. This is an anti-poor policy since the rich can buy
new cars.
Oliver Go   |2009-07-31 06:31:04
i totally agree with eugene balcos statement that not everyone can afford a new
car here in the philippines and some more the govt is giving extra burden to
motorist to in terms of maintenance. If the government main reason is the clean
air act then i would suggest cleaning up the local public tranports sector like
the jeepneys and buses which produces so much black soot
Myra Aure   |2010-02-26 02:40:58
To Eugene Balcos and Oliver Go, I share your sentiments.

It is a
breakthrough in the Philippines if the stupid government will think first of all
affected parties with their proposed plans.

Why put the burdens on the
gasoline-engine consumers? is it not the diesel-engine vehicles that largely
contributes to the pollution?

most of the gasoline stations have gone E10. Since studies are still beeing
conducted to test compatibility on year models, where could you find the
upgrades to use E10 for old cars. Or better yet who does this upgrades.
Philip   |2009-08-26 09:57:33
I can't say the government was inconsiderate in mandating the use of biofuels. I
think its unfair to criticize the government for implementing the Biofuels Act
when there have been numerous studies suggesting that the use of ethanol will
not harm your car. But aside from the environmental considerations, I think the
government had other concerns such as; an alternative market for sugar growers
(where 2-5 million jobs are directly or indirectly dependent on) since we are
signatories to AFTA and energy independence (would you rather buy products made
here or products made abroad).

No doubt there have been negative reports on
the use of ethanol but we can not completely discount the positive reports. I
have been a user for quite some time now and have had no problems at all. I
think the best way to approach this is to look at the effects of the Biofuels
Act in more than one respect.

Hi is a 1990's limited edition toyota corolla EFI compatible with E10?
Joe Larue  - What e10 can do to your old engine   |2010-02-28 09:31:01
The Government is doing its part to help reduce carbon emission footprint and
lessen our impact on climate change and that is why we see most of our gas pumps
have the E10 sticker. On the other hand E10 fuel blend can really affect the
fuel system of your old car such as the rubber components inside the carburettor
and rubber diaphram of your mechanical fuel pump. Even EFi engines that are not
designed/certified to use ethanol will encounter serious fuel system problems.
So if you really care about making this planet green and livable then I suggest
that you trade-in your car to your nearest favorite car dealer and make sure the
car you are getting is certified ethanol ready! If you can afford to buy a
Hybrid or Blue Diesel then by all means do so!

Definitely carburetted engines and old EFi engines can run on E10 but since its
not designed to take ethanol there will be serious consequences! You will notice
your car seems to lack power and responsiveness. Then you will realize your fuel
consumption has increased. Then the hard starting will become frequent and you
think the solution is a simple tune-up. Then thats when your headache starts. So
better sell it while your car still has some value! But if you can't afford the
new cars in the market then try getting a brandnew electric scooters which only
sells for P23,000 or take the MRT!

i got a toyolla xl96 last dec and with no idea about E10 before. filled the car
with 20 liters of premium with E10 and what a shocking surprise, the engine turn
unstable until 1 month of using, the engine was not in good shape anymore. same
as my sentra fe 98 which i got it last month, engine was stalling, idle
unstable. both cars are carburated, so in my own experience, E10 are not
compatible with those models
